Research Interns

Kasun Pathirage, 2023

I was born and raised in Galle, a city in Sri Lanka. I obtained my B.S. degree from the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka. After completing my BS degree, I had an enriching experience working as a research and project assistant at Sabaragamuwa University in February 2019 for four years. In 2020, I seized another opportunity to advance my education and started a master’s program. I’m completing a research-based master's degree in Agricultural Environment and Resource Management under the Faculty of Graduates, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka. My research focuses on enhancing soil availability of potassium and phosphorus nutrients through natural mineral sources (Potassium Feldspar and Eppawala Rock Phosphate) in Sri Lanka using microorganisms. In 2023, I engaged as an intern research scholar at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for six months in Scottsbluff, NE. As a opening point in my academic career in the United States, I will be starting my master’s in agronomy as a graduate research assistant at Texas A&M University in January 2024.

Piumi Yaddehi Arachchillage, 2023

I was born and raised in Sri Lanka. I graduated with a B.S. from Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka (SUSL). After my graduation, I had a rewarding experience working as a teaching assistant at SUSL for an additional 1.5 years, and I also spent nine months as a research intern at the International Water Management Institute engaging myself with several research activities. In 2023, I took advantage of an additional chance to further my education and research experience as a research scholar in Maharjan Soils Lab. My research interests lie in studying greenhouse gas emissions, soil fertility, tillage, soil health, soil N dynamics, cover cropping, and crop sensing. I am expecting to start my graduate studies in spring 2024 in the United States.
